Batting is an important skill in the game of cricket. A
batsman must score as much as he can for his team to win. A good batsman has a
good knowledge of the batting fundamentals or the basics. A player with a good
command over the basics of batting are likely to have a good batting technique
as they progress. Here are the fundamentals of batting that generally every
batsman follows.
GRIP
A general way to hold a cricket bat is by forming a V with
your thumb and forefinger down the back of the bat on the outside edge. For a
right handed batsman the left hand is at the top of the handle and vice-versa
for a left handed batsman. Both the hands should be close together and the
bottom hand should be a bit loose. Your top hand should be dominant so that you
can have good control over your shot execution.
STANCE
It is a position in which a batsman stands on the crease to
face a delivery. An ideal stance is the one in which the batsman shifts the
weight of the body equally on both legs. The feet should be apart to an extent
that the batsman is comfortable and the body weight is evenly distributed
between the legs. The knees should be slightly bent and the toes must be
leveled such that the shoulders don’t get closed off while facing the bowler.
The head should be straight and still over the front shoulder with the eyes
nice and leveled. The front elbow should point straight down the pitch and the
bat should be held close to the body.
BACKLIFT
The bat should be lifted back as the bowler approaches to
bowl. The bat should be lifted back in between the first and third slips but at
the point of impact with the ball, it should come down a straight line. The
head should be kept as still as possible and any movement forward or backward
should be made before the downswing of the bat.
These are the things that should be mastered for making yourself a successful batsman.
